Production Units
What Do We Do?
An Overview of Production Units
Direct Reduction Unit
Arfa's direct reduction unit, based on the MIDREX process, was commissioned in June 2012, with an annual production capacity of 800,000 tons of sponge iron and 60,000 tons of briquettes. In its first year of operation, the unit succeeded in recording production exceeding 5% of its nominal capacity. In 2021, with the aim of fully meeting the steelmaking unit's consumption requirements while promoting economical production and job creation, the company implemented a 50% capacity expansion project without increasing the volume of the reduction furnace, a world first.
Steelmaking Unit
Arfa Iron and Steel Company's steelmaking unit was ready for commissioning in June 2013, and steel production at the unit began in the same month. A major milestone in the history of the company's steelmaking unit was achieving its nominal capacity in 2017, its fifth year of production, followed by producing more than 6% above its capacity in 2018, an unprecedented record in the country's steel industry. In August 2022, with the aim of retaining domestic customers while increasing export share, the company completed a 25% production capacity expansion project. In addition to increasing production volume, this expansion enabled the production of 125 × 125 mm billets and 225 mm round billets, complementing the company's existing product range, which includes 130 × 130 mm, 150 × 150 mm, and 200 × 200 mm billets.
Electric Arc Furnace
Arfa Iron and Steel Company's steelmaking unit produces molten steel using an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), which is considered the cleanest method of producing molten steel from an environmental perspective. The electric arc furnace used by the company is one of the most modern furnaces currently operating in the country and incorporates state-of-the-art Italian technology. With a capacity of 180 tons, the furnace can produce 3,100 tons of molten steel per day. One of its key advantages is its automated oxygen and carbon injection lances.
Ladle Furnace
Arfa's ladle furnace has a capacity of 180 tons and is equipped with automatic charging and bottom-blowing capabilities. Since high-quality production is a major priority for Arfa Iron and Steel Company, the molten steel transferred from the electric arc furnace undergoes gas purging in the ladle furnace using argon, an inert gas. This process removes impurities, including sulfur. The operating principle of a ladle furnace is very similar to that of an electric arc furnace, with one key difference: the ladle itself serves as the furnace vessel instead of a dedicated electric arc furnace shell.
Vacuum Degassing
One of the distinguishing features of Arfa Iron and Steel Company's steelmaking unit is its vacuum degassing and decarburization facilities (VD-VOD), which set it apart from many other steelmaking plants in the country. In this section, molten steel is exposed to vacuum conditions and undergoes additional processing, enabling the production of various high-quality and alloy steels for demanding applications. Equipped with VD-VOD facilities and capable of producing a wide range of high-quality and alloy steels, Arfa Iron and Steel Company can play an effective role in reducing the country's dependence on imported steel grades.
Continuous Casting
The continuous casting machine at Arfa Iron and Steel Company's steelmaking unit is of the arc type and has six casting strands. The casting molds are equipped with Electromagnetic Stirring (EMS) systems, which help ensure that the billets have a desirable metallurgical structure and that the resulting final products meet high-quality standards. Additional casting equipment, including submerged and protected casting facilities, helps ensure that the company's products are free from gas bubbles and have excellent surface quality.
Industrial Gas Production Unit
Arfa Iron and Steel Company has established a dedicated industrial gas production unit to ensure a stable supply of the industrial gases and liquids required by its production lines. The unit can produce gaseous and liquid oxygen, gaseous and liquid nitrogen, as well as liquid argon. It plays a vital role in providing continuous and reliable support for the company's production processes.
